Order of the Engineer

The Puget Sound Engineering Council (PSEC)
Inductee receives her ring
is proud to sponsor “The Order of the Engineer” to qualifying
students and working engineers in the Puget Sound area.

The Order of the Engineer was initiated in the United States in 1970 to
foster a spirit of pride and responsibility in the
engineering profession, to bridge the gap between training and experience, and to present to the public a visible
symbol identifying the engineer. The Obligation of the Order of the Engineer is similar to the Canadian "Ritual
of the Calling of an Engineer" initiated there in 1926.

Simply stated, The Order of the Engineer is a ring ceremony in which engineers meeting the solemn obligation
take an oath called the “Obligation of an Engineer” to promise to uphold the high standards of the engineering
profession. They are also given a stainless steel ring to be worn on the fifth finger of the working hand
identifying their profession and obligation to other engineers and the public.

Any engineer is eligible for induction if he or she has graduated from an ABET-accredited engineering program
or holds a license as a Professional Engineer. Students enrolled in ABET-accredited engineering degree programs
are eligible if they are within two academic terms of graduation.

2009 Order of the Engineer Induction Ceremony

PSEC’s 2nd Order of the Engineer induction ceremony (Ring Ceremony) was held on April 17th at the Silver Cloud Inn in
the University District of Seattle. The ceremony was held in conjunction the kick-off of the Society of
Engineer’s (SWE) Region J Conference. The event was organized by Kelly Griswold (SWE’s PSEC
Representative). Unfortunately, Kelly was out of town on the day of the event and Paul Grant, PSEC’s President,
 presided over the ceremony.
Inductees take the Oath at the 2009 Event
The event was originally slated to induct 15 individuals. However 2 individuals had conflicts
and could not attend. On the day of the event, there were 3 walk-ins that signed up for the induction, bringing
 the total to 16.

Due to the warm sunny weather and heavy traffic, the ceremony started a few minutes late at about 6:15 pm.
After the welcoming of the inductees and opening remarks by PSEC President Paul Grant, five members of the Order
of the Engineer helped to facilitate the induction. Melissa Mormilo of SWE gave an overview of the history of
the Order; Samantha Bronner, also with SWE, then gave an overview of the significance of the ring. George
 Balagtas of the Institute of Electrical & Electronics Engineers led the oath of the Obligation of the Engineer;
Garth Merrill of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) presented both the rings and the certificates to
the inductees; finally, Joshua Alcantara, also with ASCE, provided concluding remarks welcoming the inductees
into the Order and also reminding them of the importance of their responsibilities. Paul Grant then concluded
the program by welcoming the inductees into the Order and inviting them to enjoy the sandwiches and drinks that
had been arranged by Kelly Griswold and also invite them to stay for SWE’s Ice Cream Social at 7:30.
